Martin, As I wrote last week, I go back to the culpability of Supreme Court in the Citizens United decision wherein they effectively decided there would be no limits on election spending. This gave Musk (and others) the power to threaten legislators and insist on policies favorable to billionaire interests. It is shameful.
There is a much bigger play here; we have a choice between a net zero society with renewables or an automated society with AI. Since both require rare earth metals, we can only choose one, not both. And Elon Musk is making that choice for us, by insisting on automation and re-shoring manufacturing to the US, destroying Chinese supply chain. China is not standing by. They have stopped access to their monopoly on rare earth metals, and increase threats to invade Taiwan. This is a dangerous situation, but the stakes are high and the rewards are higher. In h to he day Trump won, Elon added $70 billion to his fortune. He stand to make a lot more in h to he next 4 years.
Martin, will you please quit being so f****** pure of purpose and think in some different directions about the Democrats. They have to answer to all the same forces and influences as other political institution in this in this Brave New world. You don't have to give high praise to Bernie Sanders, but as a reporter you do have to acknowledge the tremendous accomplishment of staying in the game and getting small contributions of time talent and treasure which could be the antidote to the poison of the insanely greedy and cynical among Us. Nothing worth doing ever gets done without investing more not less of the coins of the realm.
I so appreciate the many insights you have offered us from your informed and heart filled perspective. AND, I for of one, wish you would a bit further in the hopeful and helpful solutions category. Knowing full well it may be pollyannish to some or even yourself at times. I for one need thought leaders who attempt to push me in what they deem to be the next right thing and risk a little blowback from the troops.
After reading Heather Cox Richardson report on the deal, my conclusion was that Musk had a double win. First win is that he can invest in China. Second win is in the King of the Hill race among billionaires. His fortunes are singularly better and the competition hasn't gained any advantage.
Musk is aiming to become the world's first %trillionaire
