Martin-My best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. There’s a lot going on out there and your commentaries are valuable. As to the following excerpt from your post:

“In our writer fishbowl where it seems everyone aspires to be a writer and write well, it is easy to forget that writing is increasingly an exotic profession.”

It seems that maybe $200,000 for an English, journalism or communications degree might be a hard sell for a career that will not necessarily be able to generate enough income to justify the cost. And there’s so much talented competition. Plus, having a tormented soul, a state of being that appeals to nobody, is a great foundation for a career in writing. So, in summation, too much money for training plus the necessity of an enormous personal experience really limits the size of the new class of writers graduating from America’s universities every year. I’m glad you are a writer, because you like it, you’re good at it and you have some great things to write!

I’m sorry to hear this, and wish you well.

I have never once had a positive, interested response from anyone when I’ve said I was a journalist/am a writer!

Writer gets a different response than journalist these days. I am not a journalist but I have huge respect for them and much of my opinion writing is possible because of their work. They used to get respect but the right has demonized them for telling the truth.

I’m more of a writer than a journalist these days. I have a feeling people assume I’m just a dabbler. Nowadays everyone is a writer, model, photographer or something. I was all-in on the writing before the internet existed, though.

Well, at least we know you're an honest man. That is, by far, the moist important quality anyone can have. And get well soon. You have my sympathies.
