House Republicans Are Making a Huge Mistake
How, exactly, is shutting down the government one month before an election a good idea?
Are we sick of this crap, or what? House Speaker Mike Johnson and his merry men, under orders from Donald Trump, who was not elected to anything recently, will shut down the government on September 30th.
Their plan is to include a poison pill in the temporary funding package that would require proof of citizenship to vote, either a passport or a birth certificate. It’s a clear attempt to scare off voters, furthering the false idea that illegals can vote in elections. They cannot and there is no evidence they even try.
Btw, if you are here illegally, why would you try to do something that could get you arrested and deported? Duh.
Given that it is September 10th as I write this, and the House has done literally nothing this year, how is shutting down the government a good idea? Their plan would get killed in the Senate and may not even get a Republican majority in the House as more Republicans defect away from Trump and his cronies.
Someone isn’t thinking this through. No surprise there. A lot of Americans already think the government, specifically the Congress, is dysfunctional and a shutdown would just verify that. The same way Trump’s order to kill bipartisan border funding backfired on them, this shutdown would do the same. It is so obviously self-serving.
A reminder: Elected officials are supposed to serve us, not a billionaire down in Florida.
I guess the real question here is will the voters buy this dumb idea and are there enough of them? Everything the Trump campaign is betting on centers around the notion that they will. But as elections get nearer, we tend to start focusing on what is going on.
That focus may start tonight as the nation watches the debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. I’ll be honest, I have no idea what we will see tonight. But following that up with an enormously selfish action like shutting down the government, or trying to, strikes me as idiotic. I know I could make hay out of it if I was the Harris campaign.
The real story here is how the GOP has loaded the House with incompetent politicians incapable of governing and entirely focused on phony attack ‘investigations’ while not actually passing any laws. Which is exactly how we got to this place and how a party may shut down the government in an attempt to compromise the election, rather than winning because they did good stuff.
Joe Biden somehow got a lot of really good stuff done, like infrastructure and manufacturing jobs, working with both parties. But these days, with the Trump playbook saying that all Democrats are the enemy and compromise is a dirty word, nothing is getting done.
That’s working so well we should elect that genius to run the country? Jeez. I guess we are the chumps Don thinks we are. But why wouldn’t he when he only speaks to rooms full of intentionally ignorant folks only there to see the Trump Show?
Whenever he attempts to talk to normal people or rooms full of experts or even corporate leaders, he falls on his face. We are not universally stupid, though you’d think we are when you listen to the insulting rhetoric the Trump Campaign is spewing out daily.
It strikes me that a government shutdown is what is really stupid, especially since Trump has made it clear that it is what he wants and his House lackeys will try to do it.
This is a bad look guys. Do you really want to do this or should you think it through a little more? Oh wait, thinking things through is not your strong suit and time is running out fast. And we are watching.
And, btw, illegals cannot vote and are not trying.
