My first paid writing gig was writing a brochure for a hair replacement product. It was done for a small marketing agency. The message was very simple: get hair, get girl. I think I was paid thirty dollars, which was a pretty big thrill for putting together a few hundred words.
It evolved out of copywriting
Writing copy for ads, videos, packaging, and other promotional product and service marketing can be lucrative. If you are a freelance copywriter (not to be confused or associated with copyright, which is a legal protection), you don’t get credit for your work but you do get paid. And often paid well.
There is an advantage to not having your name associated with the promo writing you do. You can work for a variety of agencies in the same market without a conflict of interest. In my hometown, one woman writes ad copy for all the large agencies in town and makes a very good living working with other creatives.
But there is a more lucrative route to leveraging basic copy skills to a steady stream of work and it mostly skips ad agencies.
