Donations, tipping, paying it forward, and the personal blog/website question

Free, paid, or honor system? It’s an interesting choice when you are offering a paid subscription. Typically, a paid sub offer involves giving paying customers access to more content. But you do have the option of simply asking readers to support your publication by making a donation.

Medium gives you the ability to add a Tip box at the end of your posts. You can do similar on other platforms using links. The Tip box links to a payment provider of your choice like PayPal or Patreon. In my case it’s Buy Me a Coffee. The reader is taken to my page on the service and they can choose how much the coffee is worth and how many cups they want to donate.
