Just a quick note on the gift economy
I’m trying something different with this Buy Me a Coffee thing. It’s an exploration of the gift economy, a radical notion of how we exchange value. I can’t claim to totally understand it, partly because it is really a new thing. As I understand it, it is a ‘what goes around, comes around’ thing. You do a favor and maybe the world does you a favor.
As my Medium readers know, I have been earning a little from writing things that no one tells me to write. It’s been it’s own gift.
With The Grasshopper, my principal interest has been to create a place to write about the eccentric, quirky side of my brain. While there may be money involved at some point, there is not now and most of it will be free.
That being said, I believe in supporting creators financially because creation is work that contributes to community and communication, something desperately needed as the powers that be work to create an us vs. them dynamic that divides. This division is nothing more than a power grab. Those who promote it (we know who you are) do not care about any of us as human beings and individuals, regardless of political or philosophical POV.
